Murray c. Deschenes, 2025 QCCQ 6363

The Court of Quebec awarded the plaintiff Murray $3,000 moral damages and $3,000 punitive damages in relation to contractual breaches, which included defamatory emails to a financial institution, statements in court, an email to a Mr. V, and defamatory statements to a newspaper concerning the plaintiff’s conduct as a landlord. These remarks appeared in a widely circulated newspaper, which was also republished by another source.  Other controversial information in the news media lead the court to reduce the award it might have otherwise made.
